The Northern Slopes Initiative (NSI)
The Northern Slopes Initiative is a group of people seeking to maintain, conserve and enhance their local open space resource known and grouped collectively as the Northern Slopes.
Originally set up to protect the areas from housing development, the Group has expanded its work to encourage others to join with them to work for the benefit of the people and communities that live around the Slopes; and the features that make the Slopes what they are.
However, there are problems with keeping paths open, litter, fly tipping, fires, vandalism and general neglect.
If you wish to complain about any of these - or say something nice about the sites - please contact Bristol City Council's parks department who own much of the site. They can be contacted on 0117 9223719 - or email bristolparks@bristol.gov.uk.
Where are the Slopes
The Slopes are three areas of public open space situated 3 kilometres to the south of the centre of Bristol in England, United Kingdom.
The areas are used by local people for getting around, dog walking, cycling, informal play, watching wildlife, and for admiring spectacular views across Bristol.
However, there are problems with keeping paths open, litter, fly tipping, fires, vandalism and general neglect.
The slopes are shown on this map from left to right (West to East) - known as Novers Common, Glyn Vale/Kingswear and Wedmore Vale (The Bommie)- although local people may use other names included in the map below.

To find out more about the areas click on the linked names on the above text and map. This will lead to pages for each area which will tell you something about them.
What is the initiative doing?
Since 2001 the Initiative has been:
- Campaigning to raise awareness of the value of the sites;
- Finding out what local people want to happen to the areas;
- Developing ways of maintaining and improving the areas without losing their unique informal character; and of course
- What work has been done to the area so far
- Raising funds to support the work.
They have been successful in getting funds for a Doorstep Green on Glyn Vale at Cloverdown.
A series of action plans have been developed for each site which can be accessed from the links above.
The plans include work on:
- Improving community and other organisations involvement - raising awareness, listening to what people want, holding events and meetings.
- Improving access to the areas
- Improving access across the sites
- Reducing vandalism and neglect
- Maintaining and improving wildlife value of the sites
- Improving recreational facilities
- Investigating opportunities for job creation through social enterprises
- Investigate opportunities for sustainable uses for the areas, maybe - more allotments, community composting, providing local food for local people, a tree nursery, a cycle track.
